 AROMATHERAPY

The following information is part of a research paper  I completed on February 12, 2005 for the the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy.

Aromatherapy: Healing Body, Mind, and Spirit Through Auras & Chakras

“As long ago as 3000 B.C. the Egyptians were utilizing plants for medicine, massage therapy, surgery, food preparation and preservation, religious rituals, and mummification.

In early Mesopotamia , the Sumerians, Babylonians, Hebrews and other ancient Semitic peoples also utilized aromatics (oils and incense) for religious purposes.”1

All essential oils have effects on certain chakras and auras which in turn affect the body, mind, and spirit in different ways.  According to Peter and Kate Damian in Scent and Psyche “Plants capture the photo-electromagnetic energy of the sun-the single most powerful source of etheric energy in our planetary system, and the sole giver of life and master healer-converting, by the cellular and enzymatic action, the sun’s life energy, and actually condensing ‘soulful essence’ from a spiritual force.  The essential oil harbors the biochemical energy and essence.”2

The body is surrounded by an energy field that is commonly referred to as the aura. The aura is an electromagnetic force field that surrounds and interpenetrates the physical body.  This force field shields and protects the body. It is commonly believed that the human aura consist of seven layers.   Chakras are energy centers that exist in and out of the body.  Chakra is a Sanskrit term meaning, “wheel of light.” These wheels of light are constantly spinning starting clock-wise (for males) or counter clock-wise (for females).  Each Chakra spins in a different direction.  Like gears behaving in the same fashion to the body for the distribution of energy as the heart does for the distribution of blood.  According to The Chakra-Handbook, “traditional writings mention 88,000 chakras… Only approximately 40 secondary chakras can be considered significant.”3 Most of these chakras are very small and have a minor effect on the energy system.

There are seven major chakras that are located within the body.  They appear like funnel-shaped blossoms, each possessing a different number of petals, which is why they are frequently referred to as lotus blossoms in the East. The petals of the blossoms stand for the nadis, or energy channels, through which energy is able to run into the chakras, where it is then able to pass to the subtle bodies.  The amount of petals, or nadis, ranges from four at the root chakra to nearly a thousand at the crown.  The seven major chakras form in the back what is referred to as the kundalini (often pictured as two intersecting snakes) representing the masculine part of our nature, with the mirror image of the seven chakras creating the hara line in the front of the body representing our feminine nature.

Every one of the energy centers contains all color vibrations, although one particular color always dominates, corresponding to the primary task of the chakra. Each chakra has a particular part of the body that is influenced by it.  The Root Chakra is at the base of the spine.  The color for this center is red.  This center is our connection with the earth and our physical needs.  The spinal column, bones, teeth, nails, anus, rectum, colon, and prostate gland are parts of the body associated with this energy center. Blood, the building of cells and the suprarenal glands are also connected with this energy center.

3Sharamon, Shalila and Baginski, Bodo J. The Chakra-Handbook Twin Lakes , WI: Lotus Press, 1988, p. 21

The Belly or Sacral Chakra is located above the genitals.  The color for this center is orange.  This is the center of our unfiltered primitive emotions, sexual energies, and creativity.  Pelvic girdle, reproductive organs, kidneys, and bladder are parts of the body associated with this energy center.  All body fluids such as blood, lymph, gastric juice, sperm, as well as gonads, ovaries, prostate gland, and testicles are also connected to this energy center. The Solar Plexus Chakra is located about 2 fingerbreadths above the navel.  The color is yellow. This is the center of our personal power, our will, vitality and determination.  Lower to mid back, abdomen, digestive system, and the autonomic nervous system are parts of the body associated with this energy center. The Pancreas gland is also connected to this energy center. The Heart Chakra is located in the center of the chest, level with the heart.  The color is green and/or pink.  This center deals with unconditional love.  The heart, upper back, lungs, and the blood circulation system are parts of the body associated with this energy center. The thymus gland is also connected to this energy center.  The Throat Chakra is located between the depression in the neck and the larynx.  The color is blue.  This is the center for communication and expression, verbal and non-verbal.  The throat, neck, jaw, ears, voice, bronchial tubes, esophagus, and arms are parts of the body associated with this energy center.  The thyroid gland is also connected to this energy center. The Third Eye Chakra is located in the center of the forehead a fingerbreadth above the bridge of the nose.  The color is indigo and/or violet.  This is the center of our imagination and inner “sight”.  The face, eyes, nose, sinuses, and central nervous system are parts of the body associated with this energy center.  The pituitary gland is also connected to this energy center.  The Crown Chakra is located in the middle of the head at the top.  The color is white and/or violet.  This is the center of our inner “knowing”, and self-realization, the seat of our spirituality and our connection with the divine. The cerebrum is a part of the body associated with the energy center.  The pineal gland is also connected with this energy center.

These chakras can have blockages.  When a chakra is unbalanced or blocked this can cause problems to the body, mind, and spirit.  With the intention of healing in mind (all healing starts with intention), one way to eliminate blockages is to expose the chakra to energy vibrations that are close to the ones in which a harmoniously functioning chakra free of blockages naturally vibrates.  These energy vibrations can be found in colors, gemstones, sounds, and essential oils.

Healing Properties of Essential oils on Physical Body, Auras, and Chakras

Essential oils are the concentrated essence, the “life force” of the plant; they have a definite effect on the brain.  Gabriel Mojay in AROMATHERAPY for HEALING THE SPIRIT states, “Essential oils, via the olfactory nerves, affect, among other parts of the brain, the limbic system-one of the most primitive regions of consciousness.   Although they are the tools of a gentle therapy, essential oils have the power to reach deep into the psyche, and to both relax the mind and uplift the spirit.”4

The essence is extracted from the plant material through a number of different methods, the most common and most popular being steam distillation.  In this process the plant material is put in a special chamber and subjected to a considerable amount of steam.  The oil from the plant evaporates into the steam.  This steam goes through a coiled tube surrounded by cold water; the steam is condensed into water and liquid essential oil, which flows into a separate collecting vase.  The essential oil will separate from the water forming a thin layer at the top.  This makes it very easy to separate.

4Mojay, Gabriel Aromatherapy For Healing The Spirit New York : Henry Holt and Company, Inc., 1996, p. 13

The essence can be extracted from many different parts of the plant.  This can be from the flowering tops, leaves, twigs, roots, resin, needles, or the entire plant. Another method is to use solvents, such as hexane, which can be used to extract fragrant materials.  Also, one of the older, still occasionally used methods is Enfleurage.  This is a traditional technique of extraction used on delicate flowers, such as jasmine.  Enfleurage involves placing a layer of flowers on a thin layer of animal fat that is odorless.  The aromatic constituents of the flower gradually saturate the fat, which is subsequently treated with alcohol to create an “absolute ex-pomade”.  This process is very expensive, not popular, and not widely used.  Some essence such as lemon, grapefruit, orange, mandarin, bergamot, and lime are cold pressed.  This is a process in which the rind of the fruit is ruptured and then the essence is pressed out.

Combining Essential Oils with Astrology and Chakras

All essential oils can be classified under a particular element with a ruling planet and have different effects on the chakras.  They also affect the body and mind in different ways. For the purposes of this paper, I have included only one example that demonstrates this relationship with astrology (for information to explain astrology a good reference is The Only Astrology book You’ll ever need by Joanna Martine Woolfork). The element, ruling planet, effect on mind, body, and chakras all correspond together.  It can be very helpful to combine all of the above information when finding an essential oil with the intention of healing a particular problem.

For example, rose absolute oil is ruled by Venus.  Venus in astrology represents love, affection, beauty, and the arts.  Rose is considered a water element.  Water represents emotions, imagination, and spirituality. Rose oil can activate and balance the heart chakra.  The heart chakra is the center of unconditional love.  Some problems that can occur when this center is out of balance are heart disease, circulatory disorders, and blood pressure problems.  A feeling of being unable to give or receive love is tied to this center as well.  Rose oil has been used in aromatherapy for anxiety, depression, circulatory problems, and menopausal problems; and as an antiseptic and tonic.  I would set up a mixture of lemon, lavender, and rose.  Lemon reduces stress, reduces high blood pressure, and balances the heart Chakra.  Lavender is calming, mood uplifting, and balances the heart Chakra.  Rose reduces stress and anxiety, as well as stimulating the heart Chakra (IMPORTANT: for contraindications on essential oils please see list below).  I would apply this mixture to the area of the heart.
